INAUGURATION CEREMONY OF THE SCULPTURE OF THE WORLD’S LARGEST BUDDHA ROCK STATUE

We are pleased to announce that the construction work of the world’s largest reclining rock Buddha statue was commenced on the rock located in the sacred site of the Sri SailaBimbarama Purana Maha Vihara at the auspicious time of 3.06 p.m. on 29th November 2012. This site is located in the Dannoruwa Grama Niladhari Division of Ruwanwella electorate in the Kegalle District, Sabaragamuwa Province.

We are proud to mention that the Buddha statue will be created by a Sri Lankan sculptor along with his supporting sculptors. This will be a monumental gift to the future generations reflecting enormous talents of a Sri Lankan artist. It will make the 2600th Sambuddha Jayanthi a golden era, and enrich the entire world with happiness of enlightenment.

Buduruwayaya Viharaya

This place is belongs to both Anuradapura and Polonnaruwa era. In past this place was use as a place to worship sacred foot of Loard Buddha. There is a Stupa (more than 3000yr old) and Buddha statue (Sethapena). This Buddha statue is similar to Thanthirimale statue and statue of Polonnaruwa Gal Viharaya. There are four sacred foots, foundations of palace and herbal hall, herbal ponds and epigraph which mentioned about state low. The river Amban ganga flow beside and it was use by queens to bath.

Gal Viharaya and palace of King parakramabahu

This was built by king Parakramabahu (1153-1186) and was a part of the Uthararama. There are three statues of loard buddha first statue is a seated Buddha in meditation second statue is a standing and third one is a reclining buddha statue carved in a rock.

Tanthirimale Buddha statue

The restoration of the statue was done under the supervision of the Archeological Department on guidance of the National Heritage Ministry. The restoration of the statue commenced following a request made by the Thanthirimale Raja Maha Vihara Chief Incumbent and the North and East Deputy Sanga Nayaka Ven. Thanthirimale Chandarathana Thera to the President Mahinda Rajapaksa. This ancient striking statue, 45 feet long was created on a stone plateau towards the northern slope of it.

In March 2001, six months before the September 11th bombing of the World Trade Center in New York City, the Taliban destroyed two ancient statues of the Buddha called Bamiyan in an attempt to cleanse the country of Afghanistan of what they perceived as Hindu heresy.

So, it shouldn't have been as shocking as it was, to see the Taliban in Afghanistan blast two enormous 3rd and 5th century AD statues of Buddha to powder with anti-aircraft guns.

"We are not against culture but we don't believe in these things. They are against Islam," the Taliban's Foreign Minister Wakil Ahmed Muttawakil is reported to have said.

The Taliban has never been known for a generosity of spirit or interest in cultural diversity, and as I say, the erasure of the past to protect the present is an old story. As archaeologists, we’ve seen evidence of it hundreds, maybe a thousand times. But the Taliban's destruction of the two Bamiyan Buddha statues was still painful to watch; and today it is recognized as an ominous forewarning of the Taliban's distaste of anything other than their own set of extremist Islamic values.
